The Living Story: Infusing physical sensation into our writing through practice, observation, and structure
Limited Capacity seats available

Reading is an intellectual and emotional activity, one that necessitates a physical experience. Our bodies both trigger and are triggered by sensory memory. We may not remember a conversation with a loved one, but we remember the coldness of their touch, how heavy the words felt in our ears, or the smell of their skin. By employing our own bodies in the craft of writing to create new worlds, new experiences, and new energy, we empower our stories to invoke a corporeal experience. Explore methods for infusing physical sensation into your writing through practice, observation, and structure. All levels welcome. This workshop will make time for generative work based on instructor-led prompts

The Science of Reading: Practical Application for Your Classroom and School
Limited Capacity seats available

The science of reading is a vast, interdisciplinary body of scientifically-based research about reading and issues related to reading and writing. This research has been conducted over the last five decades across the world, and it is derived from thousands of studies conducted in multiple languages. The science of reading has culminated in a preponderance of evidence to inform how proficient reading and writing develop; why some have difficulty; and how we can most effectively assess and teach and, therefore, improve student outcomes through prevention of and intervention for reading difficulties. This session will focus on things you can do and look for in your school and classrooms to better align your instruction with the research on reading. We will spend our time in this session focusing more on the application of best practices rather than the research itself.

How to Use Aesop's Fables to Prepare 10th Grade Students for the English II EOC
Limited Capacity seats available

Many students struggle with the concept of theme. I discovered that perhaps the complex nature of some stories we were reading in my Regular English II class is what was confusing some of my students. So I thought, maybe I should give my students a few less complex literary texts, like Aesop's Fables (which have very easily interpreted themes), and use those to formulate Constructed Response questions and multiple choice questions that evaluate how well my students interact with the English II
Standards. What I realized was that not only were Aesop's Fables rife with easily understood themes, but some fables have
detailed character development and dialogue that can be very useful for English II EOC sample questions.

It's in the Details
Limited Capacity seats available

I've been taken by the way children are using details. It seems that in many of the classrooms I have visited children are thinking of detail as a way to make their writing longer. It's as if they are thinking that a string of adjectives and physical descriptions scattered throughout the text makes it stronger. That has prompted me to return to my stash of picture books with attention to how writers use details. Let’s revisit a few familiar texts with attention to where the details matter and consider how that can inform our writing instruction.
