What's Next for This Beginning Writer?

This session will help teachers learn how to observe a child’s writing and engage with them to provide that extra “nudge” to take their writing to the next level. We will examine the developmental stages of young writers and prepare primary teachers to know their students as writers. We will also look into the relationship between reading and writing and the importance of oral language in building strong young writers.

Honoring Authenticity to Shift Statics to Stories

As educators, we hold a special task - to develop humanity and identity. Our students, especially our minority students, need identity affirming environments where they feel honored and validated. Our classrooms are spaces of healing and spaces where students should be encouraged to develop their identity and humanity. Emily’s experience as an English language learner affords her a deep understanding of the challenges students must overcome to find success. So, in this session, we’ll analyze an array of lessons where students’ authenticity is honored and encouraged to share their own stories. These lessons served as a tool that lead to learning all the stories shared in Emily’s new book If You Only Knew: Letters from an Immigrant Teacher

We will examine through the lens of a reader and explore how these insights can become important lessons in our writing instruction.

The Living Story: Infusing physical sensation into our writing through practice, observation, and structure

Reading is an intellectual and emotional activity, one that necessitates a physical experience. Our bodies both trigger and are triggered by sensory memory. We may not remember a conversation with a loved one, but we remember the coldness of their touch, how heavy the words felt in our ears, or the smell of their skin. By employing our own bodies in the craft of writing to create new worlds, new experiences, and new energy, we empower our stories to invoke a corporeal experience. Explore methods for infusing physical sensation into your writing through practice, observation, and structure. All levels welcome. This workshop will make time for generative work based on instructor-led prompts
