Using Text Sets to Support Multilinguals

Text Sets are a collection of sources that are strategically developed around a common theme, to gradually assist students in building/expanding their vocabulary and deepening their comprehension. The goal is that by the culmination of the text set, students can better read and understand grade-level-appropriate texts. Text sets also help build background knowledge and increase academic vocabulary, which are critical to supporting MLs’ reading comprehension and providing them access to complex texts.

In this session, participants will take a deeper look at how a text set is created, with MLs in mind, and how they can be used to support and scaffold their comprehension and language acquisition.

What’s the Deal with Decoding?

Decoding is the key skill for learning to read. It involves taking apart the sounds in words (segmenting) and putting sounds back together to read words (blending). Decoding is essential for reading and allows kids to figure out how to read most of the words they've heard but never seen in print. In this session, you'll learn the 5 key elements of decoding, which is the foundations upon which all all areas of reading are built.

Sealing the Deal with Sound Symbol Mapping

One of the biggest shifts with the Science of Reading is the shift from sight to sound, from levels to skills. Sound Sound Mapping is the hands-on, multisensory method of orthographically mapping words into our brain's long term word retrieval storage bank, and it is not done by memorizing words. In this session, you'll learn how to teach Sound Symbol Mapping, and the skills required for Sound Symbol Mapping to stick.

The Science of Reading: Practical Application for Your Classroom and School

The science of reading is a vast, interdisciplinary body of scientifically-based research about reading and issues related to reading and writing. This research has been conducted over the last five decades across the world, and it is derived from thousands of studies conducted in multiple languages. The science of reading has culminated in a preponderance of evidence to inform how proficient reading and writing develop; why some have difficulty; and how we can most effectively assess and teach and, therefore, improve student outcomes through prevention of and intervention for reading difficulties. This session will focus on things you can do and look for in your school and classrooms to better align your instruction with the research on reading. We will spend our time in this session focusing more on the application of best practices rather than the research itself.

Building Reading Comprehension through Knowledge, Language, and Inquiry (K.L.I.)

Drawing on insights from a multi-year, federally funded study, we will explain and model instructional practices designed to support reading comprehension for upper-elementary students. These practices are part of a new small-group intervention, called K.L.I., that engages students in repeated, systematic opportunities to develop key underlying skills essential for text comprehension, including language structure, fluent reading, knowledge activation and construction, and metacognitive processes. While designed specifically for multilingual learners who are developing their English literacy in school, the intervention practices can be informative for teachers working with any student who needs supplemental instruction in reading comprehension.
